TOTDC 1.0

The new release is here!!! *insert obnoxious vuvuzela sounds here*

http://mdqp.nachtwolf.at/Tales%20of%20the%20Drunken%20Cowboy%20-%20Chapter%201.rag

Here is the basic changelog:

The final quest is in the game (well, I sure hope this would be in the game for the 1.0 version XD);

Increasing your relationship with others as friends will net you extra scenes, and depending on who you are befriending, extra items;

Several new random scenes here and there in the game;

The home base you can buy now has extra content (related to maxed out romance and fully upgrading the base);

A mini-quest related to the sexy officer in the red light district;

Extra events/activities for the entertainment district on Europa 4;

Maltik now has a bar, a shop, a side-quest, and another place you'll have to find by going to the bar (^_^);

Some extra items here and there.

There might be something I am missing, but I figure this is all of the important stuff.

I wish to thank everyone for the support (and the patience! XD) so far, hopefully you'll enjoy the game. There might be a small update in the future (and of course bugfixing will still be happening as reports come in), but this is the turning point for me and TOTDC, as it won't be the main game I am working on anymore.

The web version will be available eventually, when I send all the files to my anonymous helper, and he sends me back the fixed version (it shouldn't be long, but since I have yet to send him the files, I'll go with "it's done when it's done" for now).

Maybe I'll write my thoughts on the game after a week or two, after the dust settles. For now, I might just try to relax a little. Anyway, enjoy the game, and stay tuned if you want to keep tabs on what I am doing! ^_^

  3. Congrats on the 1.0 release! Not all indie games reach that mile stone, so it is an important day!

  4. Quick question! Romance paths: Does malena have anything at the base if you don't go full sub? Has anything been added for her if you decline to go full slave at the end of what (was or is) the path?

    1. If you don't go full slave, you should have another scene for her romance (if I remember correctly) and then, if you upgraded your room on the base, you should then get a new action in the room to spend some time with your lover.

  6. I'm loving the update. Something I have to wonder though, is there any list of things you can search up using the extranet?

    1. Oh, and how do we trigger the sexy officer redlight district quest? Unless it's something that comes up naturally and I haven't gotten to it yet, I can't think of how.

    2. Currently, there is no list. If a walkthrough ever emerges, I expect it to have such a list (also, remember that at a handful of entries can't be discovered unless you have done certain things in the game).

      For the mini-quest, you need to meet the police officer in the RLD (which means having the sexy trait) AND do both jobs as a model. You should then receive a message next time you fly your ship.

  8. Bug report: In the quest on Europa 4 where you have to retrieve the evidence from the police station, the game hangs on my RAGS 2.4.14 if you get caught. You get brought to the game over screen but cannot load or start a new game from there. I also found the quest irritatingly difficult because the officers move even when I am selecting something from a menu and worst of all, the dots are in red and green. As someone who is colour blind, I cannot see the difference between them at all. ~_~

    1. Could you tell me exactly what you did to get caught? I did a quick test, and it worked fine for me, maybe it's a specific situation that causes the problem. If you get inside the office or the archives you can hide, so you won't have to worry about being found (and if you make your way in one of the rooms outside of their patrols, you'll be fine).

      Sadly, changing things now to be colour blind friendly might be too much of an issue. For future reference, would the best approach be to use different shapes whenever possible? Do you know of any online resources/tutorials which would help take better decisions to ensure a better experience?

    2. It apparently surfaces when you enter the room with the lady inside. After scaring her, I was trying to take the key from the open menu when a guard would step inside. So far everytime the menu is open (PC, Lights, Desk, Key) and the guard catches you the game freezes at the end. Might be some wierd interaction or just one of RAGS' many quirky memory leaks.

      As for colour blindness, I have found that if there are just two types of colours, using a filled circle and an unfilled circle (like a thick "O") generally works best. Even differences in shading help since many colour blind individuals are quite good at judging intensity of colour, especially the black-white colour blinds. Shapes work too if there are quite a few different kinds of symbols. I don't know of any online resources but one of my friends who is a coder did note that when in doubt, use Nethack as a basis. Very different shapes such as alphabets work great since everyone already recognizes them.

    3. I just can't seem to reproduce the bug, but anyway, it might very well be one of RAGS weird quirks. I probably shouldn't have used a live timer, but it's too late to do anything about it, unless I scrap everything.

      I'll make sure to keep your tips in mind for my next games. :)

    4. Combination of different shapes and shading for the win! ;D
      (With no repeats in either. I.e., yellow star --> the star will always be yellow and the yellow piece is always a star whereas the purple piece is always the rectangle hence purple rectangles, but the rectangles are never yellow nor will stars ever be purple. ;)

  9. Not a bug but I noticed you missed to color in pink some of ALICE's speach.

  10. I've been following this game for multiple years. Don't think I've ever dropped a comment but checking your blog once a week (twice when you were a day late) has been a bit of a ritual for me for a long time.

    So congratulations on this release! Good luck with your next project. :)

    1. Did you get to the part where you have to prepare a meal for the Master? There is an item you can get only if you do that first. Also, you need to find yet another item in the kitchen.

      By the way, this is just one of 3 possible ways to finish the main quest. When you meet Ricky, the game checks how far ALICE's control got, and you get different events depending on that.

      Delete
    2. Is one of the 3 a .30-06 through Ricky's head?

    3. Solving it with your guns is indeed one of the possible ways to end the quest.

      THE HORROR!
      Are we to resort to violence now, Anon1?

    5. Well, it's Celeste, so yes.
      Also, I thought the line "Let not my enemies try and fool me," quoted by the sniper in Saving Private Ryan right before he does that to the German sniper in the church tower, was kind of appropriate, in an appropriate sort of way.

    6. Okay, solved it with guns ... sort of. Guns, fists, letting Dar get a confession out of him and sending him away to jail for a long, long time, actually. I thought maybe if Cel was dating Jane he'd go after her and Cel would do the protective mother bear thing then have to get Dar to incinerate the evidence.

    Congrats on the 1.0 release btw. Keep up the good work on all your projects. :)

    1. It has a use during the final quest (although maybe it's bugged, I'll have to double check), but maybe you'll want to keep it around for chapter 2. Who knows what wonderful things it might unlock there if you hold unto it. :p

    2. As another Anon that the rubber chicken drove bonkers... your vague and mysteriously unhelpful answer to the above Anon's question is... tormentful, Mdqp.

  16. I am receiving "Sorry, this RAGS game file is unreadable". Any known fixes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Always save to disk, then open from your directory. Never open from download. RAGS is *weird* about how it handles files. If that doesn't solve it, try re-downloading, then try re-downloading the player.

      Delete
    2. That's true, but Rags REWRITES/MODIFIES the file every time it's open. Personally, I make two copies. A "master"/backup copy and a "play" copy, to, well, play from.
