New quest, new stuff to talk about

So, I finished the intro for the quest (you know the drill, quest giver, hook, starting location and dialogues, etc). I spent most of the time picture hunting, with some mixed results (I have to find some humanoid-plant looking creatures, but so far I only have one picture which I don't love too much), but at least the pictures for the location itself were easy enough to find. Other than the sex scene, and a handful of props, I shouldn't need any more pictures, as this adventure won't have as many NPCs to interact with as in certain other quests.

I have a rough idea for what I want to do with the quest, and a possible choice before the end that should prove interesting. I am even considering a possible addition the crew depending on how you finish the quest, but I am unsure, it might be a tad too extreme (also, it would increase again the amount of things I'd have to deal in the sequel, for sure). Other than that I fixed a few things here and there in the game (minor stuff, some simplification in the behind the scene mess that is my game).

Not much else, unfortunately, as I was also sick earlier this week, and my free time kind of suffered from that. I also missed an exam, thanks to that. T_T

In other news, I got a 10€ donation from T.M. (thanks a lot!), which means despite my chronic tardiness I still manage to be interesting for my audience (or maybe they have taken pity on me :p).

This should pretty much wrap this week up, I have nothing else to report, so until next week! ^_^

  1. Not sure how far back the comment was, therefore can't easily check whether you ever saw it, but there's another contest on TFGS:

14 months to conceive, develop and release a game with an oceanic theme, maximum prize money €40.00. What with TotDC being awesome, I reckon you'd stand a good chance of winning *something* there, although whether it'd make up for any dip in DC fans' donations caused by changing project for a while I can't predict.

    1. Never mind. I just found it again and saw your reply.

Well, the flattery still stands. :p

    2. I am really afraid of themes, because I feel I am not good at working within the limits someone else set on me. I do have a little Twine experiment I could probably bend a little to make it work for the competition, so I might have to consider doing something (using Twine would allow me to keep working on TOTDC as well, as it usually inspires a simpler design philosophy, closer to "pure" CYOAs).

I would never drop TOTDC, not even for a short period, I feel like I'd never finish it otherwise. :p

  2. Hello everyone I was wondering when the next update will be coming. Because I've been itching to try out the new stuff.

    1. Since I missed the December goal (if I had finished Darenzia's quest by then, I was considering making a release), now it's more like "when it's ready". I am currently working on a quest, and I'd like to add at least one more (Piper's side-quest) and maybe some miscellaneous stuff, before releasing an update.

I don't like releasing updates too often, because RAGS doesn't really allow for old saves to be used with new versions, and forcing players through the game every time just to see a little bit of new content feels wrong to me. I wish I wasn't this slow, though, this is taking way more than it should have. :(

  3. For humanoid-plant looking creatures try googling "alraune".

  6. Have you tried an image search for 'Groot'? You must have seen this, surely?

A new crew member would be a lot of extra work, but there could be options. It's OK to drop some companions in sequels, even good old BG changed a lot of the party members from 1 to 2, the only real problem is that the non-essential ones tend to get less attention.

Maybe you could test the waters? Say, introduce someone with a strong reason for wanting to leave, so Celeste has to go out of her way, make some sacrifices to keep her around, or perhaps do something quite dramatic, and then do a poll to see how many players actually made that choice? It may seem convoluted but somehow I have a feeling that, if asked 'would you like one extra party member', you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would say 'no' ;)

    1. How about asking: "Would anyone like the next release sooner or later?" How many would say "later"?

Also, please don't make this a coc-esque waifu hunt where all you do is jump thru the hoops to get the latest follower who doesn't do jack once you actually get them.

    2. To Bob Arctor: Well, I wasn't planning anything too big, it wouldn't have been a fully fledged companion, but I scrapped the idea anyway, it had a few issues I didn't want to deal with at the moment, so nothing to think about at the moment.

to anon: Nah, I wouldn't do it, there isn't that much room on the Drunken Cowboy anyway. ;)

But on a serious note, I don't think I would be able to write too many interesting characters, so I wouldn't expand the crew beyond one more person anyway, and it's probably going to be something for the sequel, if I do it at all.
