Notes for the web version of TOTDC

If you use the IE and want save/load double click runit.cmd. This should start the server and the IE automatically. To stop the server activate the window and press a key.
It requires Firefox version 22 or later and IE version 9 or later. Haven't tested other browsers yet, but it uses afaik only standard web APIs, as long as they are supported we should be good.

    1. Oh, damn, I'll try to pass this along to the person who's helping me with the web version. did you try opening the console (in the folder, right-click+shift and select "open command window" and then type runit.cmd in the console?

    1. Links are on the sidebar. Are you browsing using a phone? I think that might keep the sidebars from showing up.

  3. Yep....my being a total idiot stopped me there....I completely glanced over them. Thanks.

    1. You are welcome. The blog design probably leaves much to be desired, so you probably aren't the only one to blame here. ;p

  4. The web version for TOTDC and the Download link for the RAGS version don't seem to be working. Would love to play TOTDC hope you can help.

    2. I just had to switch web browsers :p Sorry about that.

    3. Well, as long as you can play the game, then everything is fine. :)

The web version is not perfect (I needed extensive help from someone to even get it to work), but at least it's an option, and the game should work without any major issues.

    1. The game has a RAGS version and a web version (which should work with your browser). To play the RAGS version, you should download version 2.4.14 (available among the links on the side). That is, if we are talking about TOTDC.

  6. I decided that it would be better to switch to commenting here rather than on your Patreon. Having decided that RAGS looked far too complicated and initially tried to get the game to work with Chrome, I've now switched to IE 11, and have made a little progress, in that as well as displaying jag.html the music plays. However the controls aren't working. When I look in the window that runnit.cmd is running in, I see that there are a couple of 404 error messages - presumably from the browser indicating file not found - the first apparently for the folder in which jag.html etc live (but I know the browser's found jag.html as it's displaying it) and the second the file favicon.ico. Well, it's quite right as there is no such file anywhere in the folder or in its subfolders. Any ideas? TIA.

    1. I am playing with Firefox and found no problem (I opened the jags.html file with the browser). Maybe try that one, if the browser is an issue. Also, to interact with stuff have you tried right-click or double click? That's how most things work.

    2. I'm an idiot! Right-click worked. I suppose it's not something that I'm used to doing in a browser. Thanks.

    3. No problem! Glad it wasn't a big issue. ^_^

    4. It's a lot of fun. The interface is a bit clunky, but from what you've written about it I was expecting that.

And now I've spotted Blanked, which I'll play when I've finished with this.

    5. Although now I see that it's another RAGS game, which is a bit off-putting.

    6. Glad to hear you found it fun! ^_^

Yeah, all of my old games used RAGS. I wasn't expecting it would become a hassle to run, back then. Maybe I should contact the person who helped me with TOTDC, and see if he'd be willing to do the same with the other 2 games.

    7. I play with palemoon. the game runs, but a lot of the images don't load. it seems to be the parentheses in the filenames.
      Celeste illusionist girlfriend.jpg
      (loads)
      Celeste illusionist girlfriend (2).jpg
(that and following fails to not load)

    8. Just to confirm, could you try another browser, to see if the issue is related to it (any of the "big ones" should do, like chrome, firefox, edge, safari, etc.).

    9. sorry. none of the others work here anymore..

Anyway. I did rename the files and edit the js files and things still fail to load..

It's probably something entirely different. So please ignore my previous post.

    10. Let me know if you figure out what was wrong. At least when I tried it on firefox, the images loaded correctly, so I would assume that the browser might be the cause.

    11. Unfortunately I don't know how.
I sometimes got obscure errors from the jags interpreter but it's minimized javascript, so is gibberish.

The OS here is Linux and the filesystem is case sensitive, so the initial guess was that the cause were differences in filename capitalization and special characters leaking into the interpreter..(missing escapes.. bugs...)

Here's the c file I used to move/rename the files and replace in the js files.
this does not work on computed filenames, so further manual editing was needed. But most files show up now. the gifs still don't.

    12. Sadly, I know nothing of Linux (I have zero experience with it). I'll try to pass on the information to the guy who helped me make sure the web version would work, and see if he has an idea.

Without the error messages, I figure it might be tough, however.

Are you sure you can't use firefox or chrome, just to see if the problems you are experiencing are browser related?

  7. I downnloaded Rags version 2.4.14, and I can't install it because something in my sql service pack is missing, ssceruntime. I downloaded 2.4.16 version and it says the game is unreadable. Any ideas how I can solve this?

    1. Let's see: First, know that if you still keep having troubles, you can try downloading the web version (that one runs on a browser, and it was made available specifically in case RAGS became a pain to run in the future). It's linked in the sidebar.

Here is a link which supposedly has an extra installer which might fix your issue:

      http://www.games-collective.net/theanax/RagsSetup.2.4.16.zip

If that doesn't fix it, you might want to check this post here:

Let me know if this helped!

    2. Yeah, that extra installer helped, and now it works. Just got through the prologue, and find in interesting so far. Look forward to going through more.

    3. Glad you find it interesting! RAGS games can be a bit weird if you aren't used to them, but I hope you enjoy the ride. :)
